Portrait painting has a long tradition in the art world and is held by many to be the most demanding of all art disciplines. Because a successful portrait not only looks like the person but must also evoke the true essence of that person. In the following images you will see a small sampling of portraits that range from very traditional formal portraits to young and energetic children’s portraits. Each brings to life the people that were painted.
I like starting with a phone conversation or an email where we can get to meet each other and discuss your needs, wants and hopes. We discuss whether the portrait will be formal or casual, indoors or outdoors and consider where it will hang and what size the portrait will be. I then will set up a two to three-hour session during which my client and I discuss our expectations for the portrait. I then take many photographs to use as reference for the painting. This sitting is typically held at my client's location. After returning to my studio, I sort through the photographs and choose one or more that I feel will make a great portrait. I will share these pictures with my client, via email, and upon selection of an approved image I begin the portrait process. I usually start with a compositional sketch, and I may create a full value charcoal study if the composition is complex, or a simple color study, which I will share with the client. Upon approval of the sketch, I will begin the portrait painting.
Afterwards a sketch is prepared for the client's approval. Comments or suggestions are always welcome to make sure that this the best portrait possible.
Once the sketch is approved, I will begin the finish, which usually takes 1-2 months for completion. Sometimes, when time and travel allow, I will bring the sitter to the painting or the painting to the sitter for final color matching and details needed.
Once completed the painting can be delivered framed or unframed dependent on the desires of the client.
This is a collaborative process and comments, ideas, suggestions are always welcome throughout the process. I welcome your inquiries and questions so please feel free to contact me at your convenience.
Framing costs, as well as any travel costs are added to the price of the portrait. Much of these costs can be finalized before the process begins to keep the whole process amenable to everyone.
Please visit my blog to gain a better understanding of how the process works. There are many examples of past projects with notes on the process.
